What hardscaping includes and why it matters first
Hardscape is any non-plant outdoor surface: concrete patios, paver walkways, retaining walls, steps, driveways, and outdoor living surfaces. In a full landscape install, hardscape goes in first — before irrigation and planting — because it determines drainage, grade, and where everything else sits. When a homeowner tries to add hardscape after landscaping is done, it typically means tearing up finished work to accommodate it. Planning hardscape upfront avoids that.

We design drainage slope into every surface we build and coordinate with any retaining walls or grade changes on the property. For complex sites with significant slope — common on Wasatch Front bench lots — drainage planning is a significant part of the job, not an afterthought.
We also coordinate hardscape with the overall landscape design: where beds meet patios, where irrigation heads need to be placed to avoid hardscape, and where natural transitions happen between hard surfaces and planting zones. Good hardscape looks like it was always there — not installed as an afterthought in an otherwise planted yard.
