The inground pool installation process, phase by phase
Inground pool installation starts with design and permitting. Once permits are pulled from your city's building department, excavation begins. The excavation phase is the most disruptive — we're moving significant material and need access to the backyard. After excavation, the shell phase depends on pool type: fiberglass shells are delivered by crane and lowered into the hole, which takes 1 to 2 days. Gunite or shotcrete shells are built in place over 2 to 4 weeks, requiring rebar placement, shotcrete application, and cure time before finishing.
After the shell, plumbing and electrical rough-in connects the pool to the equipment pad. Inspections happen at each structural phase — we schedule and manage these. Then pool finish (plaster, pebble, or quartz), coping installation, and decking. The equipment pad is built and equipment installed. Finally, the pool is filled, equipment commissioned, and water chemistry established. We give you a walkthrough of system operation before we close out the project.
Site considerations: soil, access, and utility locations
Not every backyard is equally easy to excavate. Davis County has a mix of soil conditions — clay-heavy foothills near the Wasatch Front, rockier ground in some Farmington Bench and Kaysville areas. We do a site assessment before quoting to understand what we're dealing with. Rocky excavation or high clay content can add cost; we find out before we start, not after we're a foot into the dig.
Access is the other factor. Our excavation equipment needs to enter the backyard — typically through a gate or across a yard. Narrow access, steep slopes, or limited clearance from structures require different equipment choices or additional planning. Utility locates are called in before any excavation — Utah's 811 call-before-you-dig requirement applies, and we don't skip it. We want to know exactly where water, gas, power, and irrigation lines run before the first bucket of soil moves.

Yes. Clay-heavy soil (common in the Wasatch Front foothills) can present excavation challenges and also creates drainage conditions that affect the pool shell over time. We take soil conditions into account in the pool design — particularly with fiberglass pools, which require a gravel backfill and specific drainage provisions in clay-heavy soils to prevent the shell from floating or shifting.
All inground pools require a building permit from your city or county building department. Most jurisdictions also require electrical permits for pool bonding and equipment. Barrier/fence requirements are typically also regulated — Utah state code and local ordinances require fencing around pools to limit access by young children. We pull all required permits and know the requirements for Farmington, Kaysville, Bountiful, and surrounding cities.
January and February for design and permitting, with excavation starting in March or April, gives you the best chance at having the pool ready for June. Spring slots fill fast — we typically book through summer by April. If you want a specific completion date, reaching out 4 to 6 months in advance is the right move.
