Materials, patterns, and how a patio is laid out
Concrete pavers are the most versatile and cost-effective option, available in dozens of shapes, colours and textures. Common patterns are running bond, herringbone, basket weave and random ashlar — herringbone interlocks hardest, which is why it earns its keep where a patio carries furniture, a kitchen or real foot traffic. For a less uniform look, travertine and natural stone read softer and age differently.
Layout is decided with the rest of the yard rather than after it. Patio size follows what actually goes on it — a table and chairs needs clearance behind every seat, an outdoor kitchen needs working space in front of the run, and a fire feature needs a seating ring that does not put anyone in the traffic path. Grade, drainage and any retaining or seat walls get planned in the same pass.
The base is the patio — everything else is the surface
A paver patio that settles, humps or drains toward the house failed underneath, not on top. Utah freeze-thaw drives water into whatever is under the pavers, freezes it, and lifts it; an under-compacted or under-drained base does that unevenly and the surface telegraphs every bit of it. Excavation depth, a compacted road-base layer built up in lifts, bedding sand screeded flat, and edge restraint that actually holds the field together are what decide whether the patio is still flat in ten years.
Drainage is designed rather than assumed: the patio is pitched away from the structure, and joint sand is chosen so the surface sheds water instead of holding it. Done properly, the flex that makes pavers forgiving in this climate works for you — the field moves slightly as a unit, and nothing cracks across the middle the way a poured slab does.
Walkways, pool surrounds, and driveway approaches
The same system works anywhere the ground moves. A paver walkway can curve with the planting instead of being formed straight, and it can be lifted and relaid if a tree root eventually pushes it — a poured path in the same spot has to be broken out. Around a pool, pavers give grip and stay cooler underfoot than a broad slab, and individual units come up if a fitting below ever needs reaching.
Driveway approaches take the heaviest load on most properties, so the base is built deeper and the pattern switches to herringbone, which interlocks hardest against turning traffic. Whatever the surface, the sequence is the same: excavate, compact in lifts, screed, lay, restrain the edge, and pitch it away from the house.

For most patios here, yes. The joints between pavers flex slightly with freeze-thaw movement instead of resisting it, so the field is far less likely to crack than a single poured slab. Repairs are also localised — a stained or damaged paver is pulled and replaced rather than patched, and a patch on concrete never matches. Poured concrete is cheaper per square foot and still a reasonable choice, but it cracks as one piece when it goes.
Concrete paver patios run $20 to $45 per square foot installed, which includes excavation, compacted base, bedding, edge restraint and the pavers. Natural stone and travertine run $25 to $40. A poured concrete patio is $10 to $20 for comparison. A 400 square foot paver patio therefore typically lands between $8,000 and $18,000 depending on paver choice, pattern and how much grading and drainage the site needs. Very small patios carry minimum pricing that pushes the per-foot number higher.
Not if the base is built for it, and that is where patios fail. Water gets under the pavers, freezes and lifts whatever is above it — so the fix is depth, a compacted road-base layer built in lifts rather than dumped in one, screeded bedding sand, edge restraint holding the field, and a deliberate pitch away from the house. A patio that heaves or dishes almost always has a base problem underneath, not a paver problem on top.
A standard patio install typically runs 2 to 5 days depending on size, access and material. Projects that add significant grading, retaining or seat walls, drainage work, or an outdoor kitchen run longer. Unlike poured concrete there is no curing wait before you can use it — once the last paver and the joint sand are in, the patio is finished. We give you a timeline before work starts.
Very little. Sweep and rinse it, top up joint sand every few years, and reseal if you want the colour held and stains kept out — sealing is optional rather than structural. Avoid chloride-based deicers, which are hard on the surface. The real advantage over concrete shows up when something does go wrong: an individual paver lifts out and a replacement drops in, and the repair is invisible instead of a patch line across the patio.
